THE  SCOTTISH
          National Cagebird Society Show 2001
The annual Scottish National Cagebird Society Show was held at the Royal Highland Exhibition Hall at Ingliston, Edinburgh on January 1st and 2nd.   This was the 88th annual Show and the 33rd Open Show, since the foundation of the event in 1913.
Patriarch of the Fife Fancy Canary - Walter Lumsden, now  aged 87, he was an honoured guest at the Scottish National. Due to his advanced years and recent illness he was not exhibiting, but his son David was carrying the standard.

Walter was the founding-father of the Fife Fancy, back in 1951, and carried off the supreme prize for Best Bird in Show at the 1976 UK National, with his Self Fawn Cock.

It was that historic win, which led to the Fife being acknowledged as a distinct new variety of canary. He is shown here admiring Willie McKay's Self Green Hen, which took Best Bird in Show.

BEST BIRD IN SHOW

Willie McKay and his son Kevin Gorman scored a huge success with their unflighted, self-green, yellow Fife Hen.

This bird was judged:

  • Best Fife Fancy
  • Best Champion Fife
  • Best Champion Green
  • Best Canary in Show . . .
  • Best Bird in Show
and was awarded more than twenty specialist Society Rosettes.

Willie has been exhibiting at the Scottish National since he was 14 years old, and although he has had many 'firsts' this was a special day.

Willie and his son Kevin Gorman show together as the 'McKay & Gorman' partnership. This photo reveals the extent to which they swept the board with their Self Green Hen, taking the crystal vase, challenge shield, trophy and various medallions. The National Show was badly affected by the week of snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures which hit Scotland before the event. A total of 2,500 birds of all kinds were benched, with just 400 Fife canaries - about a third down on last year.

Once again Fife canaries were the most numerous variety on exhibition.
Opposite are just a  few of the rosettes won by Willie and Kevin's Self Green Hen as Best Bird in Show.
